Opposites are definitely a subject that can use a lot of oral teaching if the student hasn’t had it before. These ones are tricky!

1.10
A new graphic organizer. Some students need walk-through help to understand how to use it. Remember composition can be transcribed by the teacher if the student struggles with the physical act of writing!
1.9
Today introduces simple graphic organizers, which are repeated throughout the course. In addition to meeting state standards, graphic organizers are a useful tool for your student in both reading with comprehension and in writing well.
1.7
Today we have the second portion of Grammar-Land. Feel free to break it up over several lessons.
1.6: Lobo and the Lamb, Reynard and Mrs. Crane, antagonists
More thought-provoking stories that are good to think about! More work on nouns and capitalization of proper nouns. Beginning to ask students whether characters are good or bad, a prelude to talking about protagonists and antagonists. More on story structure.
1.5: The Fox and the Grapes, The Lion’s Share, Story Structure
Talking about what makes stories interesting and “problems” in stories. Some pre-writing composition stuff, too. Making stories in your head is a first step to writing them on paper!
1.4: The Lion and the Gnat, The Hare and Her Friends, Proper Nouns

1.3: The Wolf and the Kid, The Dog in the Manger; Reading Well; Telling Stories
Very short instructions today and no workbook pages, but these are some big ideas: reading with voices! Remembering and reciting a story! Then we introduce the first part of Grammar-Land: Mr. Noun! This is quite long and it’s very important to read with voices, but feel free to spread it over several days. The next…
1.2: The Fox and the Crow; Characters; Nouns
Today’s lesson has actual workbook pages! Make sure you’ve got the My Book of Characters ready to go, and help your student understand how to use it. We’re introducing nouns today; in my experience students usually pick up on them pretty quickly, but if they seem to be struggling, you might want to add some…
1.1: The Lion and the Fox; How to Learn New Vocabulary
The Lion and the Fox, by Emma Serl Teaching Notes: Although the workbooks are designed for independence, there’s a limit to this with seven-year-olds in mind! In the beginning, in particular, there is a LOT of written instruction in the lesson that they will almost certainly need help wading through. The curriculum becomes more and…
